LITTLE WOOD JUNIOR SCHOOL

Littlewood Junior School is a nursery and primary school located in Katooke, a suburb of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. The school is a private initiative by Edward Musisi, who founded it with the goal of making quality education accessible to all children, regardless of their religious background. Even if parents are unable to pay the school fees, their children are always welcome.

In 2015, we started with 18 students, and by the end of 2024, this number had grown to 60.

Edward Musisi established the school after acquiring the land in 2008. Together with members of the Katooke Community Development Organization (KACODO), he initiated the school's construction. Thanks to our close collaboration with KACODO, the school is deeply rooted in the local community and enjoys strong support from the residents.

CLEAN DRINKING WATER

In the summer of 2023, Lex Schellevis and Esther Nederlof visited Little Wood Junior School in Katooke, a poor suburb of Kampala. They were impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of school director Edward.

Lex and Esther noticed that the school had a well from which water could be pumped, but the water was not clean. They believed that purchasing a water filter would greatly benefit the students of Little Wood Junior School.

Upon returning to the Netherlands, they approached Jan van der Horst, the school director of De Höve Primary School in De Heurne. Together with him, they launched a campaign to raise as much money as possible for a water purification system.

The campaign began with Lex and Esther giving presentations to all the classes about Little Wood Junior School and the importance of clean drinking water. Particularly noteworthy was that the students in grades 7 and 8 from De Heurne were able to ask direct questions to the students in Uganda via WhatsApp video calls.

Inspired by this, the students of De Höve dedicated a week to fundraising efforts. The week concluded with a market where various items were sold, including homemade cupcakes, bracelets, and honey from Heurns Veld.

After the spring vacation, a live WhatsApp video call was made between the two schools to announce the amount raised during the campaign. The total raised was an impressive 7,398,683.94 Ugandan shillings (equivalent to €1750)!

There were happy faces in Kampala and happy faces in De Heurne. The internet truly brings us closer together. "A wonderful example of citizenship education and global orientation!" remarked school director Jan.

ERVAN

Ervan is a 12-year-old boy who lives with his mother. His mother faces a challenging situation: she works hard to make ends meet and does not have the financial means to send Ervan to school. As a result, Ervan is forced to stay at home, even though he deserves the opportunity to learn and grow. The sad risk is that without access to education, Ervan could veer down the wrong path or be forced to work at a very young age, severely limiting his chances for a better future. However, we have made the impossible possible for Ervan.

With just a small contribution, we can now offer Ervan the opportunity to attend secondary education. We have revived his dreams and restored hope for his future. But we don't want to stop at Ervan.

There are countless children like him, with talent but without the financial means to seize educational opportunities. If this story touches you and you would like to help, please do not hesitate to contact one of our board members. Together, we can guide more children like Ervan toward a better future.

RONALD

From a very young age, it was clear that Ronald was an exceptionally intelligent boy. He excelled in primary and secondary school, and his potential was undeniable. We are proud to say that we provided Ronald with the opportunity to study at one of the leading universities in East Africa. He embraced this opportunity with determination and successfully completed his studies in solar energy engineering. Today, Ronald has founded his own company contributing to the development of sustainable energy solutions (www.kasmeraenergy.com).

Ronald is a shining example of what is possible when we give talented youth the chance to fulfill their potential. But we don't want to stop with Ronald. There are many other talented students dreaming of a better future who deserve the opportunity to study. If you also want to support students like Ronald, please contact us.

Together, we can open doors to success and opportunities for more promising young people.

LIBRARY

Thanks to a generous donation of nearly 400 books from the Read to Grow Foundation and financial support for the construction of a new building, Bright Angels School now has a wonderful library.

For many schools in Uganda, this is a rare luxury, but now the children of this school have access to quality books that will help improve their reading skills.
